Why did you decide on construction/architecture/engineering as your career?
We
started by wanting to bring high design to the built environment at all
levels. We don’t believe access should be for the wealthy or purely
for profit. We started with to be a laboratory for ideas and have
designed quite a few “case studies” to prove not only the design but
economic viability of our ideas, which we have maintained throughout our
existence.
What is about what VBC does that excites you?
The scale of what we have set out to do is overwhelming and the challenges and
What did you do in your career prior to this and how did it lead you to VBC?
I
have quite varied experience. I started out in Houston on til-up
concrete construction. Then I moved to San Francisco and work on larger
retail and residential developments with the Irvine Company for a large
firm. While still in San Francisco, I moved my focus to custom large
value single family residences which I knew was my passion. Then I
move to Boston and worked on some large commercial projects with
community outreach components which I enjoyed until I finally found my
home at LABhaus which combined my love of housing with offsite
construction and standardized product offerings. This ultimately led me
to VBC.
How did your relationship with VBC happen?
I
was pregnant and I potential client thought that I should talk to
Vaughan because “he was smart and we would do great things together.” A
few weeks later we were designing 4125 Chestnut.
What do you see the future bringing for the business and industry?
Growth
and opportunity, but most important to me is access. I belive everyone
shoudl have access to a better designed, better constructed, built
environment. I feel like that’s my drive and focus in this ever growing
industry.
